Volvo: Pedestrian Airbags

Volvo, the Swedish car manufacturer, has always been regarded as the flagship of car security technologies. Earlier this could be applied to the security of passengers. Volvo made a step further and cared about pedestrians.

The company has announced that as of 2013 it's going to install pedestrian airbags into its Volvo V40 model. The airbag will cover the lower part of the wind shield and the front pillar of the car, which will allow to protect those who got into trouble.

The only unclear detail is how to distinguish a person from, say, a tree… But this is already a remarkable step up in road security.

This video shows how the technology works:

Of course this is the next step in the development of technologies for our everyday lives, which is, however, still very far from the ideal. It seems that number of injuries in each case will depend on the skills and experience of the driver, if not on the will of God!

That's what I call a service! It looks throroughly thought out at first glance. But the matter is that it's a model of an ideal accident. There's a collision and a person falls directly on a pillow appeared. And I torment myself with a question: what happens if an angle of person's falling is different a bit.

Hey, that's better than nothing, anyway. Of course they can't take care of all the angles possible. So far, at least.
